Abstract
The Portable Energy Dispersive X-Ray Fluorescence Analysis and Its Use for Analysing Archaeological Ceramics. On the Present State of the Measurement Methods in Pottery Analysis
Nowadays, modern archaeometry has at its disposal a wide range of tools for the scientific analysis of pottery finds. In contrast to the continual evolution of measuring equipment and methods, the archaeometry of pottery in Germany, as the result of structural factors, is characterised by archaic ideas concerning the investigation of pottery. In this paper the handling of one of the latest methods, the portable energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence analysis, is examined critically and fundamental aspects for the successful use of spectrometers described. Moreover, the evaluation of the Vanta M spectrometer from Olympus for analysing pottery is discussed.
