Abstract
Several attempts have been made to reconstruct the late Merovingian spatha suspension; this mainly happening on evidence of single graves additionally impeded by the mainly very badly preserved leather components. For my sug - gested reconstruction I combined all relevant evidence and transferred it into a three-dimensional model. In doing so all parts which can be identified archaeologically are arranged in a functionally sensible way. I was able to prove the link between sheath and suspension: for the first time the pyramidal studs are of vital importance. My suggestion can be used for all existing variants of different fittings. On usage and comfortable transport of the weapon the results from the three-dimensional reconstruction lead to a conclusive overall picture. They also enable a view on the combination with the sax which often accompanies the spatha in the late Merovingian period and therefore influences the way of carrying the spatha. Furthermore the basic question of the waist and shoulder strap is answered clearly.
