Abstract

A completely preserved copper alloy buckle from Kaiseraugst, previously thought to be late Roman, is in fact a part of a lady’s belt dating to the early modern period. It consists of a twisted buckle and a sheet metal fitting decorated with a circular and floral pattern. The fitting’s ornament, shape and technology point to a group of belt fittings and book fastenings dating to a period between the mid-16th to the mid-17th century. The fastening mechanism with a buckle and prong is unusual as it only exists on two other examples: a buckle from Grellingen (Ct. Baselland / CH) and one from Wittenberg/D.
