Abstract
Two circular lead pendants with the image of a cross were discovered at the Slavic-Scandinavian maritime trade centre Rostock-Dierkow. They belong to a group of comparable lead pendants with cross distributed around the Baltic Sea. Examples of this group often occur at places which are integrated in a far-reaching network of communication and innovation; it is very likely that these Scandinavian pendants imitate Carolingian-Ottonian disc brooches which were also frequent around the Baltic Sea from the 9th century onwards. Therefore, the lead pendants with cross can be associated with a group of Scandinavian objects (e. g. tongue-shaped brooches, cloverleaf brooches, lead pendants decorated with knobs and circles) which were based on Carolingian models.
