Abstract

A Quarter of a Roman Silver Platter with a Greek Inscription from the Area of Ternopil / UA

In November 2019, in the area of Ternopil (Ukraine), a looter took a hoard of hack-silver comprising at least eleven objects, including a quarter of a silver platter of type Drexel 1 weighing 880 g. The rim displays a frieze with Dionysian and hunting motifs. On the reverse there are two inscriptions: The first runs KΛ(αυδιου) • KEΛEPOC and names the owner. The second runs ΛΙ(τραι) Θ OY(γγιαι) IΓ : (γραμματα) Θ and designates a measure of weight of 9 litres, 13 ounces, 9 grammata, or in Latin 9 librae, 13 unciae, 9 scripulae. Accordingly, the complete weight of the original round silver platter would have been 3311,92 g.
