The Profile of Archäologische Informationen

Archäologische Informationen (Arch. Inf.) was founded in 1972 as the specialist archaeological journal of the DGUF (ISSN 0341-2873). It has a global circulation with a print run of around 900 copies. The journal publishes in German and English.

Archäologische Informationen peer reviewed, online and in open access

From Volume 2012 onwards, Archäologische Informationen has supplemented the usual board review with an additional peer review. From Volume 2013 onwards, Archäologische Informationen has been published not only as a print edition but in open access as well, i.e.

  • access is free, for DGUF non-members as well,
  • there is no subscription or paywall.

The older volumes have been successively retro-digitised and also made available in open access for free. Our journal has thus gone on the offensive in confronting the greatest challenge facing scientific journals today. Within the discipline in Germany, Archäologische Informationen is the first major journal to have implemented open access so comprehensively. For our readers, we thus gain contemporary, easy access to all volumes published and better transparency thanks to open data. For our authors, we gain:

  • speed,
  • high visibility, wide circulation,
  • optimum trackability and accessibility of their articles by search engines,
  • bibliographic entry of each individual article in the OPAC of the University Library Heidelberg and thus automatic visibility in the Karlsruhe Virtual Catalog (KVK) and in WorldCat,
  • the additional option to publish raw scientific data which can and must be referenced (open data, see below),
  • higher citation frequency and networkability of your articles which can be read in open access.

Archäologische Informationen focuses on

  • new research in the field of European prehistory, early history and mediaeval archaeology, especially syntheses, more general historical evaluations and research reviews,
  • the open discussion of topical archaeological controversies in the “Forum”,
  • interdisciplinary topics, particularly those at the interface to the natural sciences which are relevant to archaeology,
  • the further development of methods and theories relevant to archaeology,
  • the further development of archaeological ethics and policy issues of the discipline, including academic study and training,
  • improving the protection of cultural assets and the cultural landscape, and integrating interested laypeople and the work of volunteers into archaeology.

To this end, we also expressly welcome articles by authors from other disciplines.

The online edition also includes: open data and supplemental material

From the 2013 Volume onwards, Archäologische Informationen Online has significantly expanded the possibilities of a scientific article, i.e. by the option of open data and additional materials. It is thus now possible to publish raw scientific data which can and must be referenced. Articles can now be submitted with their associated data, but it is also possible to publish data which has already been evaluated separately. Documentation which explains the data record and makes it intelligible is indispensable in both cases. These data can only be seen online, they are referenced in the printed article.

Content of Archäologische Informationen
  • The focal topic: the first section of each printed issue of Archäologische Informationen is devoted to a focal topic. The issue following a DGUF annual meeting usually contains material relating to the topic of this meeting. We attempt to publish as many talks as possible in an expanded form as scientific articles. The focal topic is followed by further - unrelated - articles on topical research work.
  • The “Forum”: an element which is unique in the established publication landscape of German archaeology is the “Forum”, in which several related articles openly discuss topics in the style of argument and counterargument. An initial article opens the discussion. The response comes from authors asked to respond by the editors and from texts received otherwise by the editorial office. The author of the initial article is frequently given the opportunity to sum up the discussion at the end from their point of view. Topics which are currently being hotly disputed scientifically or by society in general can thus be openly discussed and different positions weighed up against each other.
  • The "Dissertationen und Examensarbeiten” (Doctoral theses and dissertations) section: this is a special service which Archäologische Informationen provides for junior scientists. We invite young colleagues to present a summary of their research findings to a broad circle of readers free of charge. In this section, the reader gains an insight into topical research being undertaken by the junior scientists, usually long before their final publications exist.
  • The "Tagungen & Arbeitsgemeinschaften” (Meetings & research collaborations) section: a news section where the organisers of meetings and members of research collaborations can report on their activities. The idea is that especially groups which do not publish their own meeting proceedings have an opportunity to report promptly.
  • The "Rezensionen” (Book reviews) section: this is where Archäologischen Informationen publishes reviews of recently published literature. The editors particularly welcome the submission of overviews of a number of recently published publications on a specific topic instead of conventional reviews (i.e. reviews in the Anglo-American sense).

Open Access Policy

This journal offers free open access to all its content (Open Access Policy), according to the conviction that free public availability of research is a contribution to a worldwide exchange of knowledge.
