Abstract

During a recent excavation at a settlement site in central Libya Epipalaeolithic material was uncovered. Typological analysis as well as three radiocarbon dates allow to chronologically position the assemblage to the 2nd half of the 8th mill. BC. A Correspondence Analysis of the toolkit corroborates the strong similarities with contemporaneous sites in the Western Desert of Egypt. This provides the first reliable evidence of the reoccupation of the formerly hyper-arid Eastern Sahara during the Early Holocene within an approx. 1.000 km wide and archaeologically unexplored area between the Great Sand Sea of Egypt and western Libya.
