Abstract

The following arcticle discusses several cases of infant burials at early medieval churches in northern Lower Saxony in order to unveil some aspects of the process of christianisation. After a short methodic discussion the findings of the St. Amandus Church Aschendorf (Lkr. Emsland) are discussed focussing on the integrative aspects of the christianisation process and not so much on differentation between pagan and christian. Besides this, the impact of the religious studies category of syncretism on the archaeological record is criticized.
