Abstract

Following the DGUF conference in 2024, discussions will address whom archaeological (professional) ethics are designed to serve: solely archaeologists? Alternatively, should the interests of archaeological sites and the societal demands placed upon them also be considered? Drawing upon recent examples from Austria, where ethical principles have been at least selectively embedded in position papers, standards, laws, and conventions, an alternative to traditional „archaeological guild regulations“ will be outlined.
