Abstract

This article begins with a look at the legal requirements for metal detecting in the Netherlands and then briefly outlines the history of the Portable Antiquities of the Netherlands (PAN) project. I will then explain how the project works in its current form and describe the structure of the PAN database and our approach to registering finds. Finally, I will give some examples of the types of research projects that have been made possible to date with the help of the PAN database.
