Ansätze zur präzisen Beschreibung und Klassifi kation handgefertigter Keramikgefäße aus Ecuador

Abstract

This article presents two different approaches for the classifi cation of ceramic shapes. The basis of the so-called classifi cation of basic shapes (Grundformen) is the system developed by KARSTENS (1994). The method was adapted, the main criterion is the ratio of the maximum diameter and the vessel height, in addition some features of the vessel shapes are taken into account. The computerprogram SECANTO (Section Analysis Tool) uses scanned profi le drawings and calculates on this basis distances between the vessels.
These methods were applied to create a classifi cation of fi fty vessels from the montaña-region of Baeza, province of Napo, Ecuador.
