Abstract

Since the 1970s research concentrates on a new type of settlement. Beside a favourable topographical situation in terms of regional communication, the main characteristics are trade and craft production. These settlements belong to the periods LT C2 and LT D1. In some cases a move from the open to a fortifi ed settlement is likely. Structures that seem typical for these oppida, like a spatial-functional settlement organisation, trade, coining and sanctuaries are already present in open settlements.
