Abstract

On the basis of the features and fi nds from the excavations on the dwelling  mound Hessens in Wilhelmshaven it is succeeded with a cooperating analysis between settlement and textile archaeology to gain comprehensive new results in regard to the defi nition, the production and potentially the transport of the often discussed “Frisian cloth”. Thereby all important production steps of textiles could  be documented. Furthermore a slipway for smaller coastal vessels and the access to the supra regional trade routes along the North Sea coast were detected. In addition, a search for textiles of possibly Frisian provenance was started, using  the well investigated example of the so called Reihengräber in the Alemannia. In the process, a special group of cloak-fabrics could be identifi ed, that have been produced in a method very similar to the textile production corresponding to the coast.
