Abstract

By a chain of sites in Egypt’s Western Desert a dynastic caravan route run by donkeys can be reconstructed in a length of nearly 400 km. The artefacts and features of the Abu Ballas Trail are showing three intensive periods of use, starting with the end of the Old Kingdom. For these periods different logistical concepts can be recognized, which allowed the crossing of the desert.
