Abstract

The position and purpose of archaeobotany in German archaeological research is discussed from the point of view of paleoethnobotany and archaeopalynology. Some specific research results are considered, with particular emphasis on the progress made over the past 25 years which has led to greatly improved archaeobotanical methods. Plant remains found during an archaeological
excavation are archaeological finds and the proper investigation of every type of material found must be seen as part of archaeological research as a whole.
