Abstract
Wood was one of the most important and vastly used prehistoric materials. Concerning prehistoric woodworking, onecan distinguish between eight main techniques , being d evided into two main groups : seven 'tooltechniques' (cutting) and one 'auxiliary meanstechnique' (structurally modifying). The individual techniques, their areas of application, and proven or assumed tools and auxiliary means, resp., are d e scribed in detail. The existence of independents awing and planing techniques is discussed and is doubtedby the author. Special attention is focused on putative 'fire hardening' , notoriously quoted by archaeologists, which is rejected on the basis of archaeological, ethnographical, and other sources
