Abstract

The prehistoric cremation burials of Schleswig-Holstein from the period of 1100 BC up to 800 AD were examined to fi nd out age specifi c dressings, grave goods, further characteristics of the burials, as well as child and juvenile mortality. For the time up to 100 BC strong relationships between the age at death and the above mentioned characteristics were discovered. Partly it was possible to clearly
differ the grave goods of children, juveniles and adults. Since 100 BC it is hardly possible to detect any relationships between age at death and gravegoods, etc. Until 100 BC the age of initiation to be buried on cemeteries was obviously at least two months. After that time notably less children were buried at the cemeteries. Child mortality can therefore be guessed only for the period until 100 BC.
