Abstract

All efforts to limit the spreading of metal detecting / treasure hunting having almost been unsuccessful, the author has discovered a brand new argument to ban metal detectors used by the public: huge quantities of unexploded ordnance are discovered by private metal detector users, among them the numerous military relic hunters who dig them up, take them home, stock and manipulate them. The inevitable consequences of their inconsiderate behavior are blasts, killing hundreds of them and maiming at least three times more. The public safety issue should be a convincing argument to apply the in article 36 of the European Treaty fixed restrictions which finally will allow governments to limit the metal detector sales in the EU.
