Abstract

Monument preservation as an institution and science was developed in the 19th century. The dissertation aims to examine this development within the German-Danish border region. Therefore, this investigation compares the establishment of structures of monument preservation in Denmark, Prussia and the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein. Subsequently, the analysis is concerned with the main question on how the creation and transfer of knowledge and values of monument preservation were generated. In order to answer this question, the production of knowledge associated with heritage preservation is analysed through the technologies of collection, excavation and drawing. Furthermore, the study, which is based on archival material, focuses on the implementation of ideas associated with heritage and their funding under varying power relations.
