Abstract

Municipal archaeological offices play an important role in conserving historical and archaeological monuments in widespread areas. These offices have the specific advantage of being close to both decision makers and the public. Due to this close connection, as well as intense cooperation with other institutions and active public relations work, both discoveries and issues can be shared effectively. Local aspects are of utmost importance in this work. Ideally, municipal archaeology can function as a focal point for regional identity. This not only mirrors a vital aspect of the importance of archaeological work for the society but also influences the general acceptance of archaeology in the public mind.
