Abstract

The article pleads for an expansion of archaeological research beyond the modern era to the presence from a theoretically informed perspective. A broadening of the archaeological panorama not only enables a reflection of the ‚archaeological perspective‘, but also to expand the social and academic relevance of archaeological research. This results in new theoretical, methodological, empirical, legal, and ethical challenges that can sharpen and develop archaeology, its self-image, and its methodological repertoire. Although an ‚archaeology of the present‘ has hardly been advocated in the German-speaking countries so far, the current academic attention on material phenomena should be used to intensify this project and position archaeology in the field of disciplines directly addressing the world of today, as long as there is a transdisciplinary interest in cooperation and archaeological perspectives.
