Abstract

In March/April 2020 German Archaeologists were asked for their opinion about setting a salary benchmark concerning the four customary categories of personnel on commercial excavations (excavation helpers, skilled workers, technicians and head of excavations). A very clear and tight pattern can be seen for all interest groups of archaeology (employers, employees etc.) participating in this study. Especially employers and employees gave very similar numbers: A minimum of 3.600 € gross/month for heads of excavation, at least 3.000 € gross/month for technicians, 2.500 € gross/month for skilled workers and 2.100 € gross/month for excavation helpers. Those numbers are well above the current average salary, but still far below the wages of archaeologists working in comparable positions in public service or for similar positions in the construction industries.
