Abstract

The article reports on the results of a DGUF survey carried out in Germany at all institutes / departments of prehistoric archaeology, and medieval and post-medieval archaeology, at the beginning of 2020, which recorded the numbers of undergraduates and postgraduates for 2019. It showed that the projected figures for prehistoric archaeology & medieval and post-medieval archaeology in 2019 were approx. 175 BA degrees, approx. 132 MA degrees and approx. 52 doctorates. A more detailed analysis of the figures shows that doctoral studies are much less important nowadays than they were even in the 1990s – and an MA degree has become the standard postgraduate degree needed to enter the profession. Compared to the situation twenty years ago, the number of graduates has fallen by 10 %, while undergraduate numbers in general in Germany have risen by 32 % – hence archaeology as a discipline is dwindling. Taking this together with other current studies shows: The current number of MA graduates in prehistoric archaeology & medieval and post-medieval archaeology roughly corresponds to the demand in the labour market, graduates have a good chance of finding work in the profession.
