Abstract

This study documents all parts of wreck 2 from Ralswiek (Rügen, Germany) and reflects on the reconstruction already carried out in 1995. The context of the find situation is described on the basis of selected secondary finds and various scientific examination results. By comparing the individual components with Nordic and Slavic shipbuilding techniques, an attempt is made to classify wreck 2 in the currently formulated building traditions of the Baltic region. For the first time, this work expands the existing catalogue of Slavic shipbuilding techniques to twelve characteristics. This comparison allows a differentiated consideration of the combination of Nordic and Slavic influences present in wreck 2, which is also shown in the shipbuilding techniques of Skuldelev 5. Both boats represent a hybrid form between the building traditions formulated so far. This work thus not only offers a comprehensive portrayal of the life cycle of wreck 2, but also provides a new perspective on the transcultural spread of knowledge in the Baltic region by critically examining the previously formulated building traditions.
