Abstract
The elective course on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and diffusion ten-sor imaging (DTI) presented here was developed to provide medical students with a prac-tice-oriented and scientifically grounded introduction to modern neuroradiology. Elective courses are designed to give students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and skills in a freely chosen area of interest beyond the standardized curriculum. Grounded in con-structivist and problem-based learning principles, the course combined interactive lectures, group work, hands-on exercises, and critical discussion of scientific publications. The aim was to inspire students to engage with imaging techniques, deepen their understanding of methodologies, and equip them with basic fMRI and DTI data analysis skills. Evaluation results revealed high student motivation, particularly during practical sessions. Intensive support from a teaching duo allowed for individualized guidance but posed significant or-ganizational and time-related challenges. Analysis of the evaluation results highlighted ar-eas for improvement, including reducing group size, expanding the teaching team, and optimizing the scheduling. This course demonstrates how innovative teaching methods can create a practical yet academically reflective learning environment. It underscores the im-portance of balancing teaching quality with resource management and offers valuable in-sights for refining similar programs in medical education.
