Abstract

Online teaching brings with it various challenges for instructors and students. It can be additionally challenging when teaching first-year students. This paper therefore summarizes a reflection on the implementation of an online-only seminar for first-year students of political science. In addition to a detailed description of the seminar structure, the results of a multi-part survey of the students accompanying the seminar are presented. Three aspects are given special attention regarding their role in the students' learning success: learning groups, evaluations of each seminar session, and the conceptualization of the seminar content towards the examination. Overall, the results show that a clear and communicated seminar structure, which is also adapted during the semester in a constant exchange with the students, contributes to the learning success of the students.
