Abstract

Due to the corona situation and the associated lockdown, the predominant in-person classroom teaching in the pharmacy department had to be converted to online formats within a short time. However, this challenging task also offered the opportunity to redesign the “Pharmaceutical Toxicology” seminar based on the principles of “Scholarship of Teaching”. Different tools such as tutorial videos with subsequent online discussion (based on the principle of the "flipped classroom") as well as possibilities for independent knowledge verification (e. g. learning apps), but also the controlled learning progress by the teacher (exercises with subsequent marking), were implemented. To verify the learning progress of the students in this redesigned seminar, in addition to checking the exercises, the final exam was used. The level of difficulty of the final exam was comparable to the exams of the previous courses. In addition, students completed an evaluation in the course of the seminar as well as at the end in order to compare the students' assessment of the newly designed seminar with that of the lecturer. Based on this evaluation, essential advantages of this new conception (e. g. flexible working hours and improved control of learning success) could be identified. This was also demonstrated by the improved average score in the final exam. For the time after the COVID pandemic, it is planned to base this seminar even more closely on the principle of the "flipped classroom" by replacing the online discussions with classroom events.
