Abstract
This type of pendant occurs in the middle of the 8th century BC in Italy and can still be found in Early and Middle La Tène contexts. Based on their lower part, the pendants can be divided into two groups: indicative for group 1 are the convoluted ends, whereas group 2 is characterised by a triangular base. Both groups can be classified into several variations, which differ in form, distribution, dating and utilisation. The distribution area of the pendants emphasises the far-reaching relations within Central Europe during the Iron Age. However, mostly a wandering motif and not actually traded artefacts must be assumed. The pendants have various functions ranging from creating clattering noises to decorations or amulets. They combine the solar barque (Vogelsonnenbarke), or antithetic bird-shaped protomes, with an anthropomorphic figure. Since this figure is the main motif, it could be an early version of the pendant type »Master or Mistress of the Beasts«.
