Abstract

In 2012, the 21st annual meeting of the German Mesolithic Workgroup took place in Detmold at the invitation of the Lippisches Landesmuseum. More than 40 scientists and students of pre- and early history as well as interested amateur archaeologists from Germany, but also from neighbouring countries, took part in this meeting. Altogether, there were 20 poster and oral presentations on the latest archaeological field research and the results of scientific research relating to the Mesolithic period. In the introductory part of the meeting, which lasted several days, the presentations focused on the region of Westphalia-Lippe. In this context, the region of Westphalia, but also East Westphalia-Lippe in particular, was pointed out as an important and interesting research area for the Mesolithic period. The presented research areas ranged from South Scandinavia and North and East Germany to Bavaria and the Tyrolean Alps.
The excursion led the participants to the “Externsteine”, Retlager sources, and the site of Bokelfenn. Thus, the participants did not only visit sites from different Mesolithic periods, but also the natural areas in the Lippe district that are located in close proximity, such as the Lipper Bergland, Teutoburg Forest, Senne.
