Abstract

Since the date of entry into force of the Federal Nature Conservation Act on 1st of March 2010 the specifications of the species protection law have changed significantly. From now on the comprehensive regulations for the species protection law, which are valid nationwide, and which are designed as principles not allowing any deviations, also have an impact on the archeological fieldwork. Taking the federal state of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern as an example for typical impacts of archaeological excavations, the possible conflicting points of view on both sides, the regulations concerning species protection law and the interests of the archaeological heritage conservation, will be demonstrated in this report. Finally, a simple way of how to conduct excavations complying with the species protection law will be demonstrated.
