Abstract

In 2023, the private sector archaeology employed approximately 2,760 to 3,370 employees across Germany (i.e., 3,065 ±10 %), reflecting an increase of about 3% compared to the previous year. Furthermore, 84 % of the employees in this sector are employed on a permanent basis with social security benefits. The average salary level rose by approximately 8 % from 2022 to 2023. On average, the companies offer their employees 5.6 more days of paid leave than the statutory minimum of 20 days. Regarding the year 2024, employers anticipate a personnel growth of about 11 %, of which approximately 7.7 % will be in the qualification category “with academic degree”. Comparing to the previous year, the annual turnover of the companies increased by an average of 9.4 % in 2023, with the turnover per employee rising by approximately €9,700. The DGUF survey for the year 2023 saw participation from 25 of the approximately 106 archaeology companies based in Germany.
