Abstract
A discussion paper presented in November 2024 by the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina on gaps in the current training in the subject of prehistoric archaeology summarises known shortcomings that have been long diagnosed elsewhere. The paper proposes founding a “Forum for Archaeological Cultural Heritage Protection”. In our capacity as the DGUF board, we engage with this discussion proposal through this article. We argue that the Leopoldina paper omits a thorough analysis of the true causes underlying educational deficiencies in archaeology, which is crucial for developing effective interventions. Our contribution illustrates that the paper does not specify SMART measures for implementing the recommendations, nor does it clearly assign tasks, competencies, and responsibilities. Consequently, such recommendations are likely to be ineffective. Thus, while the Leopoldina’s discussion paper effectively encapsulates the symptomatic challenges faced by archaeology in Germany, it is, in itself, indicative of the broader issues plaguing the field.
