Abstract

The first workshop on the subject of “Women in Geo-archaeological Research in Germany” was held in December 2011. The meeting was initiated an organised by female doctoral students and scientists in the fields of archaeology, pre- and early history, geography and geology participating in the interdisciplinary special research project “Our way to Europe” (CRC 806) in Cologne. The range of topics for the presentations was as manifold as the speakers list. Two excursions to the “FrauenMediaturm” (Women’s Media Tower) and the  Archaeological Zone” in Cologne completed the programme.
The idea of a workshop originated from the desire to meet all the female doctoral students and scientists who are involved in the project and work in the different fields of archaeology, geology, and geography in Germany.
An important outcome of this meeting was the final discussion on the use of funds that are provided for the Collaborate Research Centre (CRC) by the German Research Foundation (DFG). In this case, female scientists participating in large projects are funded with the aim to increase the number of women in leading positions and to improve work-family balance. The following points were discussed: The consolidation of gender funds from various collaborative research projects would make the use of funds more efficient. In this case, a superordinate financing of administrative employees for the organisation of common projects is a possible solution. Moreover, the transferability of funds would enable a quicker reaction to changing circumstances (e.g. the support of employees having a child as an unpredictable circumstance in the planning phase). An explicit concept for the use of funds including the final evaluation of the implemented measures is
desirable. Thus, the responsible persons can be designated before the application. On the one hand, this concept would prevent additional
stress for employees. On the other hand, an evaluation offers an incentive and examples for future projects.
