Abstract

The paper prefaces the publication of essays originating from two conferences in autumn 2014 which were dedicated to the topic Open Access and Open Data at the suggestion of the authors: a section at the EAA in September 2014 in Istanbul and the DGUF Annual Meeting in Berlin on 6 October 2014. The paper sets out the general objective and the fruits of the talks are related to this overall framework. In a second part, the authors attempt to think ahead of the current debates and outline possible consequences from trends which are emerging. It seems that the ongoing process of opening up the publications involves far more than making specialist articles available in the Internet. Rather, changes originating from the world of academia can be expected in the public domain and changes rooted in the public domain can be expected in archaeology.
