Abstract

The significance of museums in the present is based on their collections gathered in the course of their history. By comparing the ways of dealing with objects and their contexts in everyday life with the status of objects in a museum it becomes clear to what extent the status of a collection object represents a reduction or even fragmentation of object information. The conventional view of a collection as an assemblage of conserved objects will be compared with a different interpretation: a collection as a device for immobilizing and fragmentation of items. From this perspective, this results in specific tasks for the museums in general: They have the power to assign new contexts to the thus transformed objects and therefore use them as a means of public communication in a responsible manner.
