Abstract

Sustainable protection and management of archaeological sites and monuments as part of our cultural heritage is not always integrated in the academic curriculum. One reason for this may be that academic teachers mostly never worked in Heritage management institutions. Nevertheless there are possibilities to integrate this subject into academic teaching in archaeology. Students should be trained to understand why the aims of academic research and heritage management are sometimes more or less contradictory. Non-invasive methods should be preferred in academic fieldwork before unavoidable destructive methods are used. Heritage management on the other hand is more than just the protection of monuments and also has to create solutions and win-win-situations for both archaeological parties.
