Abstract

In December 1940, 12 roman oil lamps were handed over to the Archaeological collection of the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena as a private trust. The political, legal and personal context of these objects is the focus of the undertaken research. Considering ancient artefacts in the 1930s, their process of purchase as well as their role to enhance personal recognition, it is clear that provenance research is an essential responsibility of University research. The reappraisal of objects with vague records in University collections can be used to raise student’s awareness for current and historical difficulties.
