Abstract

Curved hooks for holding a lure for angling have been handed down from the Palaeolithic Age to our days. However, there have also always been straight hooks, the so-called transverse fishing hooks (double pointed gorge). The following essay is dedicated to this type of hooks. It shows that this type of find is documented for the entire German-speaking region – and beyond. Temporally, these hooks are attested from the beginning of the Late Palaeolithic until our days. Evidence for the metal ages, however, seems to be lacking. This may be due to research history or tradition, or it may reflect the reality of these times: Possibly these hooks were dispensable due to other fishing techniques in these epochs.
