Abstract

Today, the theory debate is increasingly accepted as an important component of archaeological research, but the consequences of this recognition have so far hardly been reflected in the self-image, scientific communication or the training of young academics. The text proposes to name theory as the foundation of archaeology and to anchor it as such in the subject and in training. In this understanding, theory is not an additional qualification, but a requirement and starting point for every archaeological activity.
