Abstract
The silver fragments recovered from burial 5/1995 in Hagenow can be reconstructed with all due caution as an open double walled scyphus with cylindrical wall, relief decoration on the outside, and a tripartite handle. The fragments from the inner beaker with undercut
profile and the thumb plate are authentic Roman elements, whereas the relief fragments from the outer sheath are decorated in the so-called ‘Germanic relief style’. Two opposing capricorns can be reconstructed with certainty. In case all fragments really did belong to
one and the same beaker, this must have been an elaborate Romano-‘Germanic’ pasticcio. It is notable that the ‘Germanic’ metal worker respectively his employer took the capricorns as Augustan symbols of victory and transferred them to the local formal language.
