Abstract

The Teutons/Germanic Tribes of the Roman Empire period have lately received increased attention in recent German schoolbooks for the secondary level 1 as well as in the current curricula on which they are based, when compared with earlier years. This contribution addresses the question of which socio-political initial situations and didactic or education-political considerations encourage this tendency and how they are reflected in the modern portrayal of the Teutons. Furthermore, using concrete examples, it will be shown that despite some innovations with regard to content, many of the traditional depictions persist, owing to the historical research of the 19th and 20th centuries.
