Abstract

The reconstruction of ancient roads is mainly based on the following sources:
1. Descriptions of roads by ancient writers (e.g. Pausanias, Strabo).
2. The natural environment such as mountains or rivers.
3. Descriptions by travelers and maps from the 18th and 19th centuries, since the roadnetwork of that time rather closely resembled the ancient one.
4. Traces of ancient roads such as bridges, pavement and wheelruts.
