Abstract
Modernist architecture defined as white, cubic and avant-garde is in need of revision when broadening its outlines to a spectrum of form and aesthetic, that has until then been characterized as historicist. The New Parish Church/Neue Pfarrkirche in Schenna, South Tyrol (1909-1931), built by young Salzburg architect Eduard Hütter (1880-1967), can be understood as such an example. This paper, introducing the architect roughly by outlining biographical details at first, traces the development of Austrian monument preservation at the time of the building’s construction quoting from texts by Karl Holey, Julius Deininger and Max Dvorák. The theory will then be compared to building history and architectural analysis, supported by images, in order to reinforce the thesis.
